Those milestones were widely described as OpenAI completing an IPO or achieving an AGI breakthrough. Neither happened. Amazon wired the money anyway. What changed? In short, Microsoft. No public Azure churn data tied to the deal has emerged; the strategic direction is clear enough. The money moves AWS posted Q2 revenue of $42.2 billion, up 37% year over year, with operating income of $16.6 billion, up from $10.2 billion a year earlier. Jassy described it as AWS's fastest growth in 18 quarters. He also said AWS's AI business and chips business each eclipsed $25 billion in annualized revenue run rates. Sam Altman has insisted on a $1 trillion floor; Fidelity has anchored closer to $700–800 billion; Wall Street estimates cluster at $600–700 billion. Amazon's 5% stake would be worth $50 billion at a $1 trillion valuation — roughly break-even on the equity alone. The real return on this investment has to come from the cloud and chip contracts. That is the actual wager.
